March of the Penguins
I recently urged my friend Phil to
be sure to go see the film
March of the Penguins. He
spent many years "on the ice". That
means, as you may know, that he
worked in Antarctica. Of course,
working in Antarctica automatically
means that you're there for its
summer, where it's "only" 40 below.
Staff comes off the ice for
Antarctica's winter; it's too
dangerous to stay.
Phil's stories of being "on the ice"
are vivid -- because of the types of
folks who choose to work on the ice,
as well as their off-duty pursuits.
On duty, as a "fuelee", you are
fueling huge jets that land for a
fill- up. Off duty, what do you do
in Antarctica, hmmm? Well, you
devise wild costume parties, unusual
competitions, strange games and plan
trips out to, what else, ice caves!
(...what else is there?)
Actually... there are penguins. I
was telling Phil how moving, vital
and breathtaking this film is - and
I realized I need to tell everyone!
During the WINTER of Antarctica,
intrepid documentarians followed the
lives of Emperor Penguins. March of
the Penguins is a film
extraordinaire.
I warmly, warmly urge you to click
on this link to see some brief
footage (narrated by Morgan Freeman)
from the web site. And then go see
it! Take your loved ones. This whole
film is about love.
