Go to College - In Your Car
So many of us
are spending hours in our cars,
commuting. Here's a fresh idea
for using those hours well -
college courses! We currently
fill the time listening to
music, talk show radio and audio
books. But this is a delightful
option - college education
; being a life-long student.
Sites such as
The Teaching Company and The
Modern Scholar offer rich hours
of recorded classes taught by
top university professors from
Harvard, Stanford...the list
goes on. These are the top
scholars in their field,
offering their decades of
knowledge on CD's and
audiotapes. (DVD's and
videotapes also available).
Are you
interested in the ancient
Vikings, perhaps? Biology and
Human Behavior? The Ethics of
Aristotle? Great Masters:
Beethoven? Contemporary Economic
Issues? These are examples of
the types of courses you can
access.
Besides your
personal growth, consider these
options:
- you can loan
these tapes to your friends and
then discuss the course, later.
Over dinner? Take a long walk
together?
- you could take a long driving
trip on purpose to listen to the
whole course. (I date myself by
hearing the ditty, "See the
USA...")
- tell your clients (complaining
about commute hours) about these
sites - and become a hero!
I invite you to
visit these sites, even if only
to browse, for now. May you
enjoy the bounty they offer.
