"First of May, First of May..."
and Pinkie Finger Friendship
Springtime is so
wonderful, it seems to dance
with charm. My favorite month
of the year is also May - I feel
doubly charmed! May Day is also
my favorite day of the
year, partly because it's fresh
and fun and hasn't been
commercialized. As a child, did
you exchange May baskets of
candy with your friends?
(Thanks, Mom, for making this a
special day of excitement.)
Thinking about
the charm of spring bringing
warmth to the world reminded me
of another wonderfully warm
tradition, a show of affection,
that I would love to see
re-invigorated. Remember
linking little fingers with
a friend to mark your "pinkie
friendship" or to solidify a
promise as a "pinkie promise"?
How dear...
I hope that you
give your friends a hug
when you meet or bid goodbye.
Add one more thing? Link
pinkie fingers and smile at each
other and say, "Pinkie Friends".
It's a SPRING
thing to do!

Five Wishes
|
|
It's springtime. A
time of celebrating
life as the earth
re-blooms. And we
also have the other
side of life - the
time of
leaving life.
As comfortable
as we are that each
day begins
and then ends, it is
as common that we
are uncomfortable
dealing with life,
also, ending.
While life ending
is a precondition,
the handling
how life ends has
been under close
observation by many
families. We have
medical life support
systems, we have
family desires
versus legalities...
It is complex.
However, there is a
way to ease the
complexity of it -
plan ahead. I invite
you to look at the
inevitable family
issue and utilize
the great gift of
the Five
Wishes document.
The Aging With
Dignity folks
have generated a
document to help
you (when you'll
need it) and your
elderly loved ones
with the
complexities of the
end-of-life
decisions. Here's
the key - if you
peacefully
articulate your
wishes, in advance,
decisions don't need
to be discussed,
debated,
re-discussed when
the furor of
feelings occur
concomitant with the
difficult time.
I invite you to
view the site of
Five Wishes,
and the document
they offer ($5 per
document) that
offers a road map on
decisions to be made
now. "The
person I want to
make care decisions
for me when I can't"
and "The kind of
medical treatment I
want" and "What
I want my loved ones
to know". These
are 3 of the 5
wishes.
I invite you to
visit the Aging With
Dignity site, now. "Now"
is the operative
word for planning
for the eventuality
of decision times.
